Lookingglass Theatre is looking for costume designers/technicians to help create gala looks for patrons- PAID
Hello! I’m posting on behalf of Thom Cox about a potential design/build opportunity for the Lookingglass Theatre Company's Gala on May 2nd — the first annual COME AS YOU AREN'T Costume Ball celebrating 38 years of Costume Design.
From their original email to us:
“For this special occasion, we’re inviting folks to attend “in character” — i.e. arrive in costume based on featured designs from past Lookingglass productions. In doing so, we're creating a dedicated website of curated shows and character costume designs for folks to choose from.
I’m writing to you because we are hoping to connect our guests with designers and technicians (Costume, accessories, wig & makeup) whom they can HIRE to help them create their dream costume!
This could look like folks who would be interested in making themselves available for hire to consult with patrons, and perhaps even design and build a costume, accessory or specialty item like a hat or a wig.
If so, could you please share a list of the designers names and contact info with ensemble member Thom Cox? It would be greatly appreciated! (If a short bio is included, even better…)
We are also looking for costume shops you’d recommend that would be available for consultations and fittings, as well as possible rentals.
To be clear, this is a paid opportunity. Scope of design and cost of labor & materials would be worked out between each Patron and Designer. Payment would not be coming from Lookingglass, but agreed upon by all parties before any work was done and should include reimbursement for any materials or rentals.
Thank you so much for helping us offer this opportunity to both our guests and to Chicago’s talented designers!”
We had a short meeting with Thom this afternoon to get more information.
There will be a website that patrons can access with Lookingglass costume designs, production shots, and then contact info for designers and technicians that they can connect with to hire. The goal is that this website launches in the next two weeks
There are upwards of 250 premium ticket holders who will be potentially interested in getting help putting their gala look together
The details of the arrangement will be between the designer/technician and the patron but Lookingglass is strongly suggesting a signed contract is drawn up with the arrangements (fee/hourly, fitting schedule, delivery date)
The goal from Lookingglass is that the finished looks are quite close to the originals, though that will ultimately be up to the creators and patrons to decide
They are particularly interested in giving students or early career professionals work, experience, and contacts but anyone who is available can submit their info
If you are interested in being included in the contact list for patrons, please email Thom Cox at thomcox13@gmail.com with your name, contact info (including website if you have one) and a short bio. It would be helpful to specify if you are a designer or technicians (or both!) or have a specialized skill (millinery, dance wear, etc). He can also help answer any additional questions you have.
Hope some folks can take part in this! Thanks!
